Training Your Team

In order to have an efficient, well-rounded team, you must first know how to train them. A well-developed team leads to a business that you can trust to stay afloat when you’re sleeping, out of town on business, or on an extended vacation. It is one of the most important aspects of your business, and you should be sure to know some training tips that will help you develop the best possible team to suit your business.

One At A Time

If you’re starting from square one, building your business from the bottom up, you’ll only want to train a person, or at the most two people, for one department/task at a time. Hire your team members one by one and train them the same way until you have enough team members to start training one another. This will help you not become overwhelmed with all of the other business aspects you have to conquer as well. It’s important to take your time because a better-developed team will help you not go grey so soon.

Enlist Help

Don’t be afraid to enlist specialist help for training. If you are familiar with someone who already knows the material you’re looking to teach, hire them to do the training for you. They’re better suited for the job than you are, so there’s no reason to let your pride get in the way. You’ll have a more knowledgeable team member in the end.

Use Systems

Develop a training system for you and your team member to use. This way you can be more organized. Make a plan to hit each key training area/point one by one, and follow it to detail. This will help keep you and your trainee from being confused and flustered during training. Training will become much smoother than past trainings, and you’ll be able to finish training a lot faster than with no systematic planning, because you’ll be avoiding a load of bumps in the road.

Test

Between each area/point on your training system, you’ll want to give your trainee time to fully learn it, and then test them to make sure they’re grasping the general picture of what they’re supposed to be doing, as well as the most important points (closing the cash register once you’re done). Testing helps you gauge the success of your training, as well as help you learn when it’s time to move on from one training area to the next.

Train Your Follow-Up First

Train your follow-up before you train anyone else. There are three reasons why you will do this: Because this is this person will be the only other person in your business that will be knowledgeable about every aspect of the business, they will be the other person that will help you train the rest of the team, and they will be the person who will fill-in when you’re gone/busy.

Training your team is a careful practice, and you should take care to make sure you develop them well. If you do it right, you’ll have a fully developed team who’ll be able to take over whenever you need them to, which is fantastic.
